What’s Happening around Sevier County, TN September 7 – 13, 2026

Labor Day wraps up the long weekend on Monday, but there’s still plenty happening around Sevier County this week.

The Sevier County Fair gets one final day, a new traffic headache begins on Boyds Creek Highway, several popular Smokies destinations have temporary closures, and there are some good reasons for locals to play tourist this week.

And while pumpkins and fall festivals are starting to appear around town, the weather apparently hasn’t gotten the memo yet. 🎃☀️

• Monday, September 7: Labor Day and the final day of the Sevier County Fair.
• Tuesday, September 8: Daily lane closures begin on the Boyds Creek Highway bridge near Highway 66.
• Wednesday, September 9: Vehicle-Free Wednesday in Cades Cove.
• Thursday, September 10: Kuwohi Road and the trail to the observation tower are closed during the morning, reopening by 2 p.m. Arrowmont also holds its annual Souper Bowl.
• Friday-Saturday, September 11-12: Dollywood hosts Thrills in the Hills.
• Friday, September 11: GatlinBURGER Week begins.
• Saturday, September 12: Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies hosts a Sensory Morning.
• Sunday, September 13: Final day of Jurassic Adventure at The Island in Pigeon Forge.

And for Sevier County locals, Ripley’s County Days runs through Saturday, September 12, with 50% off single-attraction admission at participating Tennessee Ripley’s attractions.

🚦 Sevier County Chaos Predictor: 2/5

Overall, this should be a fairly manageable week around Sevier County. Labor Day Monday will bring some leftover holiday traffic, and the Boyds Creek Highway lane closure will create a localized headache beginning Tuesday. Weekend activity around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg should pick up some, but there is no major countywide traffic generator on the calendar this week.

Enjoy the breather while it lasts. Next week the Pigeon Forge Fall Rod Run arrives September 17-19, and the Chaos Predictor will have considerably more to say about that. 😁

Despite all the pumpkins beginning to appear around town, we’re still looking at late-summer weather this week.

Expect generally hot days with highs around the upper 80s to low 90s, mixed sunshine, and opportunities for afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

As always in Sevier County, conditions can vary considerably depending on where you are, especially once you head into the mountains. If you’re planning a full day outdoors, keeping some rain gear nearby isn’t a bad idea.

Boyds Creek Highway: Expect Delays Beginning Tuesday

This will probably be the most important local traffic issue of the week.

Beginning Tuesday, September 8, the eastbound lane of the Boyds Creek Highway bridge over the Little Pigeon River, just east of Winfield Dunn Parkway/Highway 66, will be closed daily from 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Crews are installing a waterline, and the project is expected to continue for approximately three weeks, weather and conditions permitting.

Traffic will still be maintained, but delays are expected, particularly during heavier traffic periods.

The City of Sevierville suggests Old Knoxville Highway and Gists Creek Road as possible alternate routes.

If Boyds Creek is part of your daily commute, this is one you’ll want to remember Tuesday morning.

TDOT is also continuing work along US 441, with possible overnight northbound lane closures between Ranmoor Way and the West Prong Little Pigeon River.

🎡 One Last Day at the Sevier County Fair

Labor Day is also the final day of the 2026 Sevier County Fair.

Monday’s schedule includes the Dairy Cattle Show and the Backseat Driver Contest at 5 p.m., along with the fair’s other final-day activities.

Admission Monday is $8 for ages 11 and older, children 10 and under are free, and parking is free.

Sevier County Schools are also closed Monday for Labor Day, so this could be an easy way to squeeze one more family outing out of the long weekend.

🎟️ Locals: Ripley’s County Days Are Back

Here’s one specifically for locals.

Ripley’s County Days continues through Saturday, September 12.

Residents and employees of Sevier, Jefferson, Cocke, Knox, Blount, Grainger, Hamblen, Greene, Swain, Haywood and Madison counties can receive 50% off single-attraction admission at participating Ripley’s Tennessee attractions.

You’ll need to purchase tickets in person and show a valid ID or current pay stub. The discount cannot be combined with other offers or combo tickets.

🦖 Last Chance for Jurassic Adventure

If you haven’t checked out Jurassic Adventure at The Island in Pigeon Forge, this is your final week.

The free event ends Sunday, September 13.

The Island has 22 life-size animatronic dinosaurs throughout the property, along with a Jurassic Fountain Show every hour beginning at 10 a.m.

Kids can also complete the dinosaur challenge by scanning displays along the route and receive a free gift after finishing.

It’s free, it’s family-friendly, and unlike the real Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs have remained reasonably well contained.

🍔 GatlinBURGER Week Begins Friday

Gatlinburg is giving us another excuse not to cook.

GatlinBURGER Week begins Friday, September 11 and continues through September 18.

Participating Gatlinburg restaurants will offer special burger creations during the event, and visitors can participate in the GatlinBURGER Week challenge and vote for their favorites.

If burgers are your thing, this might be a good week to arrive hungry.

🍲 Souper Bowl XXIII

Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts hosts its 23rd annual Souper Bowl on Thursday, September 10.

The community event brings together food, handmade pottery and a good cause, with proceeds benefiting United Way of Sevier County.

It’s a nice opportunity to support a local organization while taking home something considerably more permanent than the soup.

🎢 Thrills Before the Pumpkins

Dollywood’s Harvest Festival and Great Pumpkin LumiNights don’t officially begin until Monday, September 14, but coaster fans have something happening this weekend.

Thrills in the Hills runs Friday and Saturday, September 11-12.

The special event includes extended evening ride time, early ride access Saturday and other event activities and benefits.

So if you prefer coasters to pumpkins, this weekend belongs to you. If you’re waiting for LumiNights, you’ve only got one more week.

🧩 Sensory Morning at Ripley’s Aquarium

Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies hosts a Sensory Morning Saturday, September 12 from 9-10:30 a.m.

During the event, lighting and sounds throughout the aquarium are adjusted to create a more sensory-friendly environment. A quiet room is available, and sensory bags and noise-canceling headphones are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Special Sensory Morning admission is discounted $3 from general admission.

One important note: Ripley’s says its County Days discount cannot be combined with other offers, so don’t assume the two discounts can be stacked.

There are several temporary closures worth knowing about before heading into Great Smoky Mountains National Park this week.

🚲 Cades Cove Vehicle-Free Wednesday

Wednesday, September 9 is another Vehicle-Free Wednesday in Cades Cove.

The Loop Road is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists throughout the day. Remember that a parking tag is required if you’re parking within Great Smoky Mountains National Park for more than 15 minutes.

🥾 Abrams Falls Trail Closure

Abrams Falls Trail is scheduled to be closed Tuesday through Thursday, September 8-10, while crews continue replacing aging footlog bridges and performing other trail work.

Because Monday is a federal holiday, the trail is open on Labor Day. It is also scheduled to reopen for Friday through Sunday.

⛰️ Kuwohi Closed Thursday Morning

Kuwohi Road and the trail to the observation tower will be closed until approximately 2 p.m. Thursday, September 10 for an educational program.

The road and parking area close beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday night. During the Thursday closure, the seven-mile roadway is closed to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.

If you want to visit Kuwohi Thursday, make it an afternoon trip.

Bullhead Trail also continues its Monday-through-Thursday rehabilitation closures, with federal holidays excluded.

💛 Remembering Dolly: The Tributes Continue

The flowers that surrounded Dolly Parton’s statue at the Sevier County Courthouse have now found a second purpose.

Sevier County officials worked with Random Acts of Flowers to repurpose the bouquets and distribute them to patients in healthcare facilities throughout East Tennessee. The organization said it was the largest single flower donation it had ever received.

Meanwhile, Dollywood has announced several permanent additions honoring its Dreamer-in-Chief.

Over the coming months, the park plans to add a cascading waterfall outside the Robert F. Thomas Chapel, new stained-glass windows at the chapel, a new entrance to The Dolly Parton Experience, places for guests to share memories, and a new Dream Maker character in Wildwood Grove inspired by Dolly’s belief in encouraging children to dream big.

Dollywood also says a memorial remains in its welcome plaza for guests who want to remember and celebrate Dolly.

And outside the park, the Sevierville Chamber of Commerce is developing a new “In Dolly’s Footsteps” program, with walking-tour markers planned at places around Sevierville that Dolly and her family frequented during her youth.

The temporary courthouse flowers may be gone, but the tributes around Dolly’s hometown are clearly continuing.

💡 Trivia Answer

The earlier Sevier County Courthouse burned in 1856.

A fire destroyed the brick courthouse that stood on the town square and almost all of the county’s court records. Much of the surrounding town square burned as well.

The courthouse standing over downtown today was constructed in 1896.

🎄 And Apparently November Is Winter Now

And apparently Sevier County has decided that November 5 and 6 are winter. 😂

Gatlinburg Winter Magic begins November 5, followed by Sevierville Winterfest, Pigeon Forge Winterfest and Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas on November 6.

For the record, Thanksgiving isn’t until November 26, and winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21. I personally think we should be allowed to savor Autumn, Thanksgiving and each season before racing into the next one!

But whether I think Christmas should wait its turn or not, those lights are coming on. 🎄 So if you’re planning a November visit, I’ll make sure you know when everything starts.

This is something of a breather week between Labor Day and the bigger September events arriving next week.

If you’ve been wanting to visit an attraction, head into the Smokies, or spend some time around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge without a major car show in town, this is probably the week to do it.

Just remember the Boyds Creek closure if you’re traveling on that side of the county, check the park closures before heading toward a specific trail, and enjoy the slightly calmer week.

Because beginning next week, the pumpkins arrive at Dollywood, the Fall Rod Run rolls into Pigeon Forge, and September gets considerably busier again.
