Gatlinburg was originally known as White Oak Flats.
Around 1802, William Ogle selected the area for his family home and cut logs for a cabin before returning to South Carolina. He died before the move could be completed.
His widow, Martha Jane Huskey Ogle, later brought their family to the area, completed the cabin, and helped establish the settlement that eventually became Gatlinburg. You can still visit that cabin today, on the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.
