Sevier County settles into its first full week of school, which means school-zone, bus, drop-off and pickup traffic is back across the county. Visitor traffic may feel a little lighter on some weekdays, but Friday and Saturday should be busier around Pigeon Forge and Sevierville with the Smoky Mountain Stampede and the countywide high-school football jamboree.

The week starts hot with only a small chance of an afternoon storm on Monday. Rain and storm chances increase Tuesday and become more likely from Wednesday through Friday. If you have outdoor plans, the morning hours will usually be the better bet.

• School traffic is back: Watch for buses, school zones and heavier traffic around morning drop-off and afternoon pickup times.
• Monday looks best for outdoor plans: Highs will stay close to 90 degrees early in the week, with storm chances increasing Tuesday and peaking Wednesday through Friday.

Monday should be mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 90 degrees, a heat index that may approach 98 and only a 20 percent chance of a storm after 2 p.m. Tuesday stays hot with a 40 percent rain chance.

The pattern turns more unsettled Wednesday through Friday. The National Weather Service gives Sevierville a 70 percent chance of showers and storms Wednesday, followed by 60 percent chances Thursday and Friday. Saturday currently carries a 40 percent chance, with a high in the upper 80s.

The practical plan is familiar for August: schedule hikes, outdoor attractions and pool time earlier in the day, then keep a rain backup ready. Thunderstorms can be scattered, so one part of the county may get heavy rain while another stays dry. • Friday evening in Sevierville: Expect extra traffic near Sevier County High School before and after the 7 p.m. football jamboree.
• Newfound Gap Road: Drivers may encounter temporary delays near Oconaluftee Overlook from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Saturday during Mount Le Conte helicopter airlifts.

Smoky Mountain Kick-Off Football Jamboree

All five Sevier County high-school football programs will participate, including Gatlinburg-Pittman, Northview Academy, Pigeon Forge, Sevier County and Seymour. Cheerleaders, dance teams and marching bands will also take part. Arrive early for parking and expect event traffic near the school. The school announcement did not list admission information. 2026 Smoky Mountain Stampede

Friday and Saturday, August 14 and 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This two-day Bronco expo includes indoor and outdoor vendors, onsite installations and a Show & Shine event. Daily admission is $15 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children 5 and younger. Tickets are sold only at the event, with no advance admission sales. Gatlinburg Farmers Market

Saturday, August 15 from 8:30 a.m. to noon

Gatlinburg Scavenger Duck Challenge

Begins Sunday, August 16 and continues through August 23

Use the Gatlinburg app to check in at participating locations around town. Visitors who complete at least seven check-ins can receive a special Gatlinburg Jeep Duck at the Gatlinburg Welcome Center. This event continues into next week, so there is no need to finish it all on Sunday. See the official challenge listing.

Dollywood is between seasonal festivals. The Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration ended August 2, while the Harvest Festival begins September 14. The park is operating without the Summer Celebration’s nightly drone and fireworks show, so do not plan around that summer feature this week. Daily operating hours can vary, so check the official Dollywood calendar before leaving.

Sevierville Bowling Center will be closed Tuesday through Friday while a new scoring system is installed. It is scheduled to reopen Saturday, August 15 for its regular 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. hours. Mount Le Conte Helicopter Airlifts

Helicopter airlifts are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Saturday as demolition material is removed from the LeConte Lodge recreation building. Weather could delay the work.

During each flight window, hikers cannot enter the LeConte Lodge grounds or use the gift shop, restrooms, water spigots, food or beverage services. Trails and overlooks near the summit remain accessible, but flaggers may briefly hold hikers during active flights. Lodge services are expected to reopen after noon each day. Vehicle-Free Wednesday at Cades Cove

Cades Cove Loop Road is closed to motor vehicles each Wednesday and open to pedestrians and cyclists. On other days, the 11-mile loop is open from sunrise to sunset. The National Park Service recommends allowing at least two to four hours when driving the loop because traffic and wildlife stops can slow things down. Check the official Cades Cove information.

Current Park Cautions

• Laurel Falls Trail remains closed for rehabilitation, with reopening anticipated sometime in 2027.
• Bullhead Trail is closed Monday through Thursday each week, excluding federal holidays, through November 19.
• Carlos Campbell Overlook on Newfound Gap Road and Mingus Mill are temporarily closed.
• Trillium Gap Trail is under a bear warning. Use extra caution and follow bear-safety practices.
