Sevier County Events & Traffic: August 17

This week starts with dangerous heat and possible strong storms, then shifts into one of the busiest event weekends of late summer.

The Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion returns Thursday through Saturday, the Mountain Music Festival runs Friday through Sunday, and Gatlinburg’s Jeep Kickoff Ride rolls through town Wednesday. If you are not attending these events, Tuesday and early Wednesday should offer the easiest travel conditions.

Monday: Heat Advisory, afternoon storm risk and Ogle Lane road work.
Tuesday: Cookout with the Cops and another Ogle Lane closure.
Wednesday: Gatlinburg Jeep Kickoff Ride and vehicle-free day at Cades Cove.
Thursday through Saturday: Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion.
Friday through Sunday: Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg.
Saturday: Gatlinburg Farmers Market.
Friday and Saturday: Expect the heaviest traffic of the week.

Monday will be the most weather-sensitive day of the week. A Heat Advisory is in effect through 8 p.m., with a high near 93 and heat-index values approaching 103. Thunderstorms are likely during the afternoon and evening, and some storms could produce damaging wind gusts.

Monday: High near 93, dangerous heat and a 60 percent chance of storms.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high near 90.
Wednesday: Sunny, high near 92.
Thursday: High near 90, 40 percent chance of storms.
Friday: High near 88, 50 percent chance of storms.
Saturday: High near 87, 40 percent chance of storms.

Monday is not the day for a long midday hike or an afternoon without a weather plan. Tuesday and Wednesday currently look like the better outdoor days.

Ogle Lane: Ogle Lane and the right southbound lane of the Parkway near Ogle Lane are scheduled to close from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday for sewer-line installation. Read the City of Sevierville notice.
Additional Parkway work: TDOT lists possible southbound Parkway lane restrictions near Ogle Lane from Monday through Wednesday, generally between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Overnight bridge work: Drivers may encounter northbound US 441 lane closures between Ranmoor Way and the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River from approximately 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Jeep traffic: Traffic begins building Wednesday and increases sharply Thursday through Saturday near Teaster Lane, the LeConte Center, Veterans Boulevard and the Parkway.

The currently available TDOT East Tennessee construction report ends Wednesday, so late-week construction should be rechecked before the weekend.

Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion

Thursday, August 20 through Saturday, August 22

The Jeep Invasion includes indoor and outdoor vendors, Jeep parts and accessories, onsite installations and the Show & Shine competition.

Thursday: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Adults: $20 per day.
Children ages 6 through 12: $10 per day.
Children 5 and younger: Free.
Tickets are sold onsite only.

Gatlinburg Jeep Kickoff Ride

Wednesday, August 19 at 1 p.m.
Departing Rocky Top Sports World

Hundreds of Jeeps will travel from Rocky Top Sports World through Gatlinburg. Registration is sold out, but spectators can watch from locations along the Parkway. View the official event information.

Mountain Music Festival

Friday, August 21 through Sunday, August 23
Gatlinburg Convention Center

This indoor, air-conditioned festival brings three days of classic rock and heavy metal to downtown Gatlinburg. Scheduled performers include Sebastian Bach, Bret Michaels, Night Ranger, Lita Ford, Rick Springfield, 38 Special, Warrant and John Waite. Cookout with the Cops

Tuesday, August 18 from 6 to 8 p.m.
New Hope Church, 2450 Winfield Dunn Parkway

This free community event was rescheduled because of storms. Families can meet local first responders, see emergency vehicles and equipment, and enjoy free food. Read the City of Sevierville announcement.

Gatlinburg Scavenger Duck Challenge

Monday, August 17 through Sunday, August 23

Use the Visit Gatlinburg app to check in at participating businesses and find the stuffed black bear hidden at each stop. Participants completing at least seven check-ins can receive an exclusive Jeep Duck while supplies last. View the challenge information.

Gatlinburg Farmers Market

Saturday, August 22 from 8:30 a.m. to noon
1222 East Parkway, across from Food City

The market features local produce, baked goods, prepared foods and handmade products. View the official market listing.

Dollywood is currently between seasonal festivals. The Summer Celebration ended August 2, and the Harvest Festival begins September 14.

Visitors should not plan around the summer fireworks and drone show this week. Operating days and hours can vary, so check the official Dollywood festival information before leaving home.

NightFlight Expedition is now welcoming eligible season passholders for reserved preview rides through Tuesday, August 18. The new indoor adventure coaster is scheduled to open to the general public Wednesday, August 19. Because the attraction is still in technical rehearsal during the preview period, temporary downtime may occur. Check the official NightFlight Expedition page for the latest information.

Jeep Invasion traffic may slow travel toward Dollywood, especially Thursday through Saturday. Arriving near opening time will usually be easier than attempting a midday arrival.

Cades Cove Is Vehicle-Free Wednesday

The Cades Cove Loop Road is closed to motor vehicles all day Wednesday and open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Morning parking often fills quickly. The National Park Service recommends considering an afternoon visit, bringing plenty of water and remembering that there is little shade or reliable cell service. A parking tag is required. Review the Cades Cove vehicle-free day information.

Current Trail Closures

Laurel Falls Trail: Closed for rehabilitation.
Bullhead Trail: Closed Monday through Thursday each week.
Additional trail and road conditions can change after storms.

Monday’s heat and strong-storm risk make exposed or longer hikes a poor choice. Check the park’s current road, facility and trail conditions before entering the backcountry.

Free family activity: Cookout with the Cops offers free food and a chance to see first-responder vehicles Tuesday evening.

Gatlinburg activity: The Scavenger Duck Challenge continues throughout the week, and the Farmers Market offers a Saturday morning option before traffic and heat build.

Sensory Day at WonderWorks

Sunday, August 30 from 2 to 6 p.m.

WonderWorks will lower music and exhibit volume and reduce stimulation for guests who benefit from a quieter experience. Admission is listed at $15 per person. View event information.

Sevier County Fair

Tuesday, September 1 through Monday, September 7
Sevier County Fairgrounds, 754 Old Knoxville Highway, Sevierville

Hot Rod Nationals

Friday, September 4 and Saturday, September 5

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days and features classic cars, trucks and motorcycles. Expect additional traffic along Wears Valley Road and nearby approaches. View event information.

Dollywood Harvest Festival

Monday, September 14 through Saturday, October 31

Dollywood’s fall festival includes seasonal food, visiting artisans, live music and Great Pumpkin LumiNights on scheduled park operating days. View the Dollywood festival calendar.

Pigeon Forge Fall Rod Run

Thursday, September 17 through Saturday, September 19
LeConte Center at Pigeon Forge

The Fall Rod Run includes indoor and outdoor show cars, a large swap meet, vendors and awards. This is traditionally a major Parkway traffic weekend. View event information.

Dumplin Valley Bluegrass Festival

Thursday, September 17 through Saturday, September 19

The three-day festival features national and regional bluegrass performers. Because it takes place the same weekend as the Fall Rod Run, expect heavier visitor traffic across multiple parts of Sevier County. Visit the festival website.

When Will Jeep Invasion Traffic Be the Worst?

Traffic should begin building Wednesday and become considerably heavier Thursday through Saturday. Friday and Saturday will likely be the busiest days.

Can I Drive the Cades Cove Loop on Wednesday?

No. The Loop Road is closed to motor vehicles all day Wednesday and reserved for pedestrians and cyclists.

Is Dollywood Still Presenting Its Summer Fireworks and Drone Show?

No. Dollywood’s Summer Celebration ended August 2. The park is currently between festivals, with the Harvest Festival beginning September 14.

What Is the Best Day for Regular Errands in Pigeon Forge?

Tuesday or early Wednesday should be easier than Thursday through Saturday. Remember that the Ogle Lane area will still have construction-related closures Monday and Tuesday.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has 31 identified species of salamanders.

According to the National Park Service, salamanders make up the majority of vertebrate animals by weight in the park on any given day, even when human visitors are included.

Stay cool Monday, keep an eye on afternoon radar, and give yourself extra travel time once the Jeep crowds begin arriving.

If you have flexibility, use Tuesday and early Wednesday for errands, attractions and other plans that require crossing Pigeon Forge. Friday and Saturday are the days to avoid unnecessary Parkway travel.
